Legal Assistant Consumer Division – Public Protection Division

The Office of the Kansas Attorney General (OAG) is accepting applications for a Legal Assistant in our Consumer Protection and Antitrust Section of our Public Protection Division to work in support of our mission to protect the safety and security of Kansas families. This position is responsible for working with up to eight attorneys on various types of civil cases and compiling and analyzing statistical and management reports. This position requires solid analytical skill and an exceptional attention to detail.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Provides support to attorneys on civil matters related to consumer case files
- Drafts briefs, pleadings, correspondence, reports and other documents at the direction of an AAG
- Responds to consumer phone calls, emails, letters and other communication
- Prepares and maintains case files in digital form
- Assists AAG with case preparation for hearings and trial
- Maintains the electronic case management database and file management system (LawBase and iManage)
- Reviews data in LawBase for completeness of information, verifies that iManage and LawBase are accurate and complete, and reconciles inconsistencies
- Extracts data from LawBase for case tracking and statistical reporting purposes; produces reports and statistics analyzing data on trends and achievement towards goals
- Assures information is accurate and performs analytical computations necessary to process data
- Prepares motions, orders, and other documents filed with the court
- Accurately files documents into document management system (iManage) to ensure proper retention and efficient access when needed; assists with the organization of the document management system
- Organizes and coordinates exhibits; prepares discovery and ensures that discovery materials are sent in a timely fashion
- Assists other administrative support staff and AAGs as needed
- Assists with various administrative functions including answering incoming telephone calls, electronic case filing in state and federal court, photocopying, proofreading, maintaining attorney calendars, scheduling travel arrangements and preparation of fiscal documents

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Legal studies or Paralegal degree or certificate from an ABA accredited school. Substantial relevant work experience may be substituted for education, as deemed by the Attorney General to be sufficient qualification to perform the assigned work.
- Two (2) years of experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or legal secretary in a legal office setting.
- Experience working in a customer service oriented environment.
- Exceptional organizational skills are required.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
- Four (4) years of experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or legal secretary in a legal office setting.
- Experience working with an electronic document management/case management system.
- Electronic discovery experience.
- Experience with electronic filing in state and federal court

Attorneys
Attorneys employed with the OAG are designated as Deputy Attorneys General, Assistant Attorneys General, or similar. Our attorneys specialize in the practice of various fields of law including administrative, antitrust, civil litigation, criminal litigation, employment, and environmental to name just a few.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited law school
- Admission to and membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas
- Admission to or eligibility for admission to the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit
Special Agents
Commissioned law enforcement personnel who conduct civil and/or criminal investigations and perform other law enforcement duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current or past full-time law enforcement certification
- Three (3) years of law enforcement experience
Investigators
Civilian personnel who gather information, conduct interviews and manage a caseload of civil matters or complaints. No law enforcement duties are associated with these positions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in business administration, communications, criminal justice, or related field(s)
- Related professional or technical experience may be substituted for the required college study
Information Technology (IT)
IT is critical to the efficient and effective operations of the OAG. Areas of specialty include database administration, network monitoring and maintenance, IT security and end-user support.
Administration/Clerical
Administrative and clerical staff are needed to support the mission of the OAG. These include positions such as accountants, legal assistants and clerical positions with increasing levels of complexity and responsibility. Many of these positions provide support to the administrative, investigative and/or legal functions of the agency.
In accordance with K.S.A. 75-3111 and K.S.A. 75-2935(1)(j), officers and employees in the OAG are in the unclassified service of the Kansas Civil Service Act. Unclassified positions are not subject to the entitlements provided to employees in the classified service as defined by the Kansas Civil Service Act. Employees of the OAG serve at the pleasure of the Attorney General and are terminable at-will.
