The Office of the Kansas Attorney General’s Civil Division operates as a general-service law firm for the State of Kansas and agencies. We provide legal advice as general counsel to agencies across State government, we represent State agencies, institutions of higher education, and employees sued in state and federal court for personal injuries, property damage, employment discrimination, and more.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

The Civil Division houses attorneys in three sections: Defensive Litigation, Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE), and Legal Oversight & Government Counsel (LOGiC). A position is currently available in the Legal Oversight & Government Counsel (LOGiC) section.

Legal Oversight & Government Counsel (LOGiC): Attorneys in this section provide general counsel services to various agencies, boards, and commissions throughout Kansas. In addition to providing legal advice on personnel matters and open government compliance, this role involves attending board/commission meetings, assisting boards in administrative hearings, and drafting orders as necessary. LOGiC attorneys also review and approve all of the state’s regulations, and many state bonds, contracts, property transactions, and interlocal agreements. LOGiC attorneys must have the ability to learn and understand not only employment, open government, and state finance law, but also the unique statutory and regulatory authorities that apply to our client agencies.

Duties:

Legal research and writing; participating in administrative hearings; researching, interpreting, and applying statutes, court decisions, or other legal authority on points of law; serving as general counsel to multiple state agencies; and conducting legality review on proposed regulations, bonds, and other governmental matters.
