Attorney General Schmidt re-appoints KU Law Professor to Crime Victims Board

Release Date: Apr 03, 2012

Suzanne ValdezTOPEKA – (April 3, 2012) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt today announced the re-appointment of University of Kansas Law Professor Suzanne Valdez as a member of the Crime Victims Compensation Board (CVCB).

“Suzanne has been a hard-working, well-respected member of the board,” Schmidt said. “Her continued leadership will be an asset to the Board and to the crime victims it serves. I thank her for her willingness to serve in this critical position.”

Before joining the KU Law faculty in 1999, Valdez was an attorney with Kansas Legal Services in Kansas City, Kan. She graduated in 1996 from the KU School of Law, where she was a member of the Kansas Journal of Law & Public Policy, a research and teaching assistant, a participant in the Legal Aid Clinic, and winner of a Foulston & Siefkin Excellence in Appellate Advocacy Award and the 1996 Walter Hiersteiner Outstanding Service Award. Valdez received the 2000 Immel Award for Teaching Excellence and the 2002 Moreau Award for commitment to advising students. While on the law school faculty, Valdez served as a Special Prosecutor in the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office from 2005-08 and as a Pro Tem Judge in Douglas County District Court.

Valdez was first appointed to the CVCB in 2010. She currently serves as the board’s chair. Schmidt last Friday re-appointed Valdez to a second term on the CVCB ending March 15, 2016. Her nomination must be confirmed by the Kansas Senate.

The three-member CVCB provides victims with financial assistance for loss of earnings and out-of-pocket loss for injuries sustained as a direct result of violent crime. This includes reasonable medical care, mental health counseling or other services needed as a result of injury. In the event of death of the victim, reasonable medical expenses and the partial cost of a funeral, burial or cremation is reimbursable. The Crime Victims Compensation Board is organized within the Attorney General’s Office.
