Statement from the Kansas Attorney General’s Office on Cherokee County Investigation

TOPEKA – (January 31, 2014) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt's Office today confirmed that on Thursday, January 30, in Columbus, agents of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation arrested Stanley W. Pickering, 79, of Baxter Springs, on suspicion of aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated indecent liberties with a child and criminal threat. The investigation remains ongoing. Formal charges have not been filed at this time.

Any criminal prosecution resulting from the investigation will be handled by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office at the request of the Cherokee County Attorney. Any charges that might arise from this investigation are merely accusations. Individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
