AG Schmidt to serve new term on national consumer protection committee

Release Date: May 25, 2016

TOPEKA – (May 25, 2016) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt has been appointed to a sixth consecutive one-year term on the Consumer Protection Committee for the National Association of Attorneys General.

Schmidt, who has served in a national leadership role in consumer protection since his first year in office, was reappointed to the role by Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen, who is the incoming president of the organization. Schmidt is former chair of the consumer protection committee and hosted the national consumer protection conference in Wichita in October 2013.

“Protecting Kansas consumers is one of our fundamental priorities at the Kansas attorney general’s office,” Schmidt said. “Continuing to serve in this national role will support our efforts to keep protecting Kansans from scams and rip-offs.”

Under Schmidt’s leadership, the attorney general’s consumer protection division has recovered more than $117 million for Kansas consumers and taxpayers. The “In Your Corner Kansas” website, www.InYourCornerKansas.org, has made more consumer protection information readily available to Kansans. The office also has worked with the Legislature to strengthen the Kansas No-Call Act, identity theft laws, the law governing data security and consumer privacy, and the door-to-door sales statute.
