AG Derek Schmidt statement on withdrawal of DCF food assistance policy

Release Date: Jul 11, 2019

TOPEKA – (July 11, 2019) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt issued the following statement in response to Governor Kelly’s announcement this morning that the Department for Children and Families (DCF) would withdraw its policy of extending publicly funded food assistance to able-bodied adults without dependents who are not complying with the work requirements in state law:

“The governor’s decision this morning is a victory for the rule of law. I appreciate that rather than test the current law’s boundaries the governor instead announced her intention to seek her desired policy changes through the legislative process. After the governor’s announcement, I received written confirmation from Secretary Howard that DCF has withdrawn the policy.”
