Schmidt, Kobach to commemorate Memorial Hall Anniversary

TOPEKA – (October 12, 20111) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Secretary of State Kris Kobach will host an event to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall on Friday, October 14 at 10 a.m. in the building’s second-floor auditorium.

The celebration will be hosted by Schmidt and Kobach and feature a reenactment of Dr. Franklin Crane by Don Lambert and short historical talks by historians Jonathan Earle and John Jackson. Topekan and local historian Don Chubb will emcee the event and share stories of President William Howard Taft’s visit to Topeka to dedicate the building.

President Taft laid the cornerstone for the building on September 27, 1911. The building was formally dedicated on May 27, 1914, and housed the Kansas History Society until 1995. Memorial Hall was then converted into office space, and has housed the Attorney General and Secretary of State’s offices since 2000.

Punch and cookies will be served, and the public is invited to attend.
