AG Schmidt to provide document destruction for National Consumer Protection Week

TOPEKA – (February 23, 2015) – The Attorney General’s Office will celebrate National Consumer Protection Week next week with free document destruction events throughout the state, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said today.

 “Our office works hard year-round to protect consumers,” Schmidt said. “Next week, we will place a particular focus on helping Kansans protect themselves from identity theft and stay safe from scams.”

 The office will sponsor free document destruction at 10 locations throughout the state. Securely shredding personal documents is an important step to preventing identity theft.

 The schedule of events for the week is as follows:

Monday, March 2

11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Bonner Springs – Free Document Destruction
Kelly Murphy Park, 2nd and Elm Streets
In partnership with the City of Bonner Springs.




Tuesday, March 3

11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Pittsburg – Free Document Destruction
Meadowbrook Mall, 202 E. Centennial Dr.
In partnership with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.





4 – 6 p.m.

Coffeyville – Free Document Destruction
Community State Bank, 814 S. Walnut St.




Wednesday, March 4

11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Salina – Free Document Destruction
Saline County Sheriff’s Office, 251 N. 10th St.
In partnership with the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.





4 – 6 p.m.

Manhattan – Free Document Destruction
CiCo Park, Candlewood Dr. and Kimball Ave.
In partnership with the Riley County Police Department.

Dodge City – Free Document Destruction
Ford County Sheriff’s Office, 11311 E. Comanche Rd.
In partnership with the Ford County Sheriff’s Office.

Kansas State Fairgrounds – Gate 5, Enter off State Fair Rd.




Saturday, March 7

10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Topeka – Free Document Destruction
Stormont Vail Parking Lot, 11th St. and Garfield Ave.
In partnership with the Better Business Bureau.


Consumers are asked to limit their documents for destruction to three small bags or boxes. Shredding will be done onsite, except the Topeka location, where documents will be securely transported to the shredding facility.
