Attorney General’s office to handle review of Shawnee County case

TOPEKA – (May 12, 2016) – The Kansas Attorney General’s Office will review the investigation of Shawnee County sheriff's detective Erin Thompson.

Attorney General Derek Schmidt's office will determine whether any charges will be brought based on the investigation. The Shawnee County District Attorney's Office requested the attorney general's office handle the matter.

Any public comments on the matter are governed by the Kansas Rules of Professional Conduct Rule 3.6, Trial Publicity, and Rule 3.8, Special Responsibilities of a Prosecutor. No charges have been filed at this time. Criminal charges are merely accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
